Attention all students, parents, and educators!
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is transforming the way students are assessed! In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board is moving away from rote memorisation and towards a more holistic approach that focuses on developing critical skills for the 21st century.
The focus is now on Competency-Based Education (CBE). This means assessments will go beyond just testing knowledge retention. Instead, they will measure a student's ability to apply their understanding in real-world scenarios.

These circulars highlight the importance of including Competency-Based Questions, which reflect a wider educational approach aimed at supporting overall student growth.
This shift signifies a positive change in education. Students will develop a more well-rounded skillset, preparing them for future challenges and success in a rapidly evolving world.
Also, don’t forget to keep an eye out for the official CBSE website (https://cbseacademic.nic.in/) for the latest circular (Circular No. Acad-30/2024) outlining the specific assessment and evaluation practices for the 2024-25 session.
Official Notice - Assessment and Evaluation Practices of the Board for the Session 2024-25.
1. What is competency-based education (CBE), and why is CBSE implementing it?
Ans: Competency-based education (CBE) focuses on assessing a student's ability to apply knowledge and skills in real-world situations rather than just memorising information. CBSE is embracing CBE to align with the National Education Policy 2020 and to prepare students for the demands of the 21st century.
2. How will assessments change under the new CBE framework?
Ans: Assessments will move away from rote memorisation and towards evaluating critical thinking, problem-solving, and systems thinking skills. Exams will feature more competency-focused questions, encouraging students to analyse, evaluate, and apply their understanding creatively.
3. What can students expect in the 2024-25 academic session regarding assessments?
Ans: Students can expect an increased emphasis on competency-focused questions in their exams, both in Classes 9 -10 and 11 - 12. This means a higher percentage of questions will be designed to assess their ability to apply concepts in real-life scenarios.
4. Where can I find more information about CBSE's transition to CBE?
Ans: You can visit the official CBSE website (https://cbseacademic.nic.in/) for the latest updates, circulars, and resources related to Competency-Based Education and assessment practices.
